My hope was to blog more often so i could jot down the cute
things Isaac does or says. But sometimes there just doesn't seem to be
enough time.

Isaac turned 3 years old last month. And I keep asking myself...where has
the time gone. It doesn't seem possible that he can be that old. But at the
same time...it's really hard for me to remember my life without him.

I am more and more in love with my son each day. He's 3...so there are
definitely times when we go round and round. :-)

Who knew three years ago this month...when i was waiting on my home study
to be complete.....i would be so in love with this little guy.

He's smart, funny, silly, sweet, stubborn, spoiled, amazing, etc...

My adoption story may be similar to many people in a lot of ways. The bottom
line is/was I wanted to be a mom. I knew I had so much love to give a
child and could offer a child a home, family, safety, security, and LOVE!

I knew a long time ago i would adopt some day. I wasn't really sure how
others would react to that. But once I got just a little bit of encouragement from a few key people....it was happening. I've always been like that...especially with big things....I just need a little encouragement...someone to say...yeah...i think that's a good idea...or yeah...i think you can do it. I knew I really wanted to. Just needed a little nudge i guess.

That was Christmas 2006. I knew during the holidays I would be starting the process soon....and could hardly contain myself....by not telling everyone. I told some people early on...but didn't really make 'the announcement' until March 2007.
I remember telling a group of girlfriends in the car on the way to our little
christmas get-together. I said something like i have something i want to tell
you guys. They were like....WHAT? As...that's not something i usually said.

My parents were very encouraging and excited. My dad was actually ready to
go to Vietnam as soon as i started the paperwork. They totally went through
the process with me. Going to the adoption workshop, class, and most importantly....going to Vietnam!

I talked to a dear cousin before the holidays even. I think that's the
conversation that gave me the courage to mention it to others. I left there
thinking i can do this.....i know i want to. So...let's just see what others (my parents and friends) think about it too.

With the above said....of course there was much prayer involved in my decision
as well!

I had always said i wanted to have this child before i was 38. So...at
the time...i was 35...so I knew too...that it was probably time to get started.

I met with the agency in January 2007. My son - Isaac Berke Van Hettel was
born in March. I first saw his beautiful face in a picture July 3, 2007. I got on the airplane December 10, 2007 and finally saw his beautiful face in person
December 13, 2007. We were offically a family on December 14, 2007. And we arrived home (to LR) on Christmas Eve 2007 greeted by many cheering friends and family members.

Let me just say I have been very blessed by Isaac's adoption in many many ways. The obvious of course...that i have this most amazing little person in my life whom i love more than anything. But also....his transition and adjustment. It has been so remarkably easy. I was/am very lucky! I know this is not necessarily the norm either.

I remember thinking in February...he's really totally adjusted. Then March,
April would come around and I'd be like...no...now he is. He wasn't really
then. Then August....no...now he really is. Basically it was a gradual thing
with him trusting and accepting me (and his family and surroundings) more
and more each day/week/month. But was so seemless...that i kept thinking
he was already there. I felt like immediately he was ok with me. Kinda like..
i'm not sure who you are...but let's try this. He probably sensed I was so
clueless and that it might be an interesting journey. :-) He hung in there
and so did I. And we are tighter than tight now!

Since my parents went to Vietnam with me. (this is their first grandchild)
and he has always spent time with them...i was secretly worried in the
beginning....what if Isaac knows them better (because they more know what
they are doing) and likes them better and doesn't bond with me the way he
is supposed to.

Since I'm single....our situation is probably a little different than most.
My parents are a huge help to me. They are always there to keep Isaac when
I need to work late, am on-call, need desperately to clean house, mow my yard,
etc... Isaac loves his Ninna and Papa so much. But i think he likes his
Mommy pretty much too!

I have learned that being a Mom is hard work! But I've never heard any of
my married friends say that it's easy. So...i just figure it's a different
kind of hard when your single. Logistics seem to be the most daunting for
me now. But like i said....my parents are a huge help. And really there
are so many people in Isaac's and my life.....who love him. I am so blessed...
he is so blessed! Family, friends, church family, etc...

I have learned over the past few years though.....not everyone is always
on your side....for whatever reasons. Should single people adopt. That is a
whole other long, long, long discussion...that i don't really want to go
into here. But just know that the family, friends, church family, etc.. I
mentioned above....they are the very ones....who can and have helped me rise
above that and trust in my heart as I know....It was God's plan for Isaac to
be my son and for me to be Isaac's mommy!

I went into the process very naive. Sadly, I have of course since then seen
different things that can happen. Our process was fairly quick and fairly
smooth. We just had a few little bumps in the road.....that once I saw Isaac..
none of it mattered. But now knowing what i know...I am just so thankful for everything that did happen and did not happen with our process.

I think you can call our story many things......wonderful, amazing, a blessing, surreal, successful! I go back over the process, being in Vietnam, coming home, all of our firsts, and all the other things since then....and i ALWAYS get so emotional.
Such a wonderful, wonderful collection of memories....that we are just adding to every day.

My sweet son.....tells me today (after i mention i need to get us some
flowers to plant). Yes...mommy. I'm going to go buy you some flowers. I'm
going to buy you some purple flowers at Home Depot!

Mommy loves you Isaac Berke Van Hettel (for ever and ever)!

(apologize if the above story is jumping from subject to subject. It's pretty
late and am of course getting it posted much later than I had hoped/planned)

<img style="display:block; trains and tractors. He can say TOUCHDOWN and do the arms raised up sign for it. He likes to wiggle his arms to show what an Octupus (Octi) does. I figure an octupus has to do that as many arms as they have. The last few nights when we've walked at night....he has found the moon and kinda keeps tabs on it during our walk. He's a snuggle bug and likes to give hugs and kisses. LOVES to say and wave bye bye. Izy also really likes shoes! :-)

I was looking at a few blogs today and noticed on my good friend Ruth's (Izzy's Mom) blog.....that today marks 300 days since our GNR. I didn't realize that at all. That number sounds like such a long time ago. Nowadays when i think of this time last year......i know i was really really getting ready. And thinking and knowing it could be anytime. The hard part of waiting was really getting cranked up. I always thought we would travel the week right after Thanksgiving. Not sure why. It just seemed like a good time i guess. Turns out we found out about our GNR a week and a half after Thanksgiving and then traveled 6 days later. I know.....6 days later...wow! And my life hasn't been the same since. (well...i guess actually it hasn't been the same since I started the process).

It's so hard for me to imagine my life without Isaac. I always knew being a Mom would be great.....but never knew how great. Don't get me wrong.....it's hard.....harder than i ever imagined....for so many reasons. Some days I think I'm doing ok....and other days i think i'm not very good at this. I've been told this is all normal....i sure hope so. But when i see that little face and see his sweet smile and hear that laugh......i just feel this incredible lump in my throat and smile in my heart. I have to believe this was always God's plan for me......to be Isaac's Momma.

Isaac Berke Van "Izy Berke" has indeed......stole his Mommy's heart!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_aNgurSAt7zs/SO7PBMJIM3I/AAAAAAAAAGU/OIo7iyKzCkI/s320/P9270177_2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5255365434534278002" />

Explanation

I should have explained the lawnmower picture in the previous post.

That's the mower (tractor as Izy would say) that was flipped over during the tornado and landed upside down. (at Nana & Papa's house)

Izy still loves balls and books! He loves to clap when he puts a ball in a basket or anything for that matter in something. But he also expects his audience to clap as well. (which they always do)

He enjoyed a visit from his big cousin Katelyn last night. She had him laughing histerically!

Today the little fella is 16 months old! Where has the time gone? We've been home 7 months. Our little family has adjusted so well and as Papa said last night.......what did we ever do before Isaac.

One note on Nana & Papa. Some of you may remember from an earlier post...in February...their house was hit by the tornado that came through Atkins. Well...today they officially bought (closed) a house in Atkins and will be moving in next weekend! They can finally move forward with a new home and Isaac and I are very very happy and excited for them!

<img style="display:block; In some ways the time has gone by so fast, but at the same time it's hard for me to remember my life before Isaac. He is this little bundle of energy that remains a contant blessing to me!

I took a few new pictures (we had a cake to celebrate), but my camera may be on it's last legs.....so not going to be able to post the pictures. (maybe i'll go ahead and post one that was from last weekend :-))

Izy and I are very excited that our good friends (and fellow VietMoms) the Russell's and O'Connors are now in Vietnam to bring home their little ones. We can't wait to get to see and play with Sam and Liam! We're very very happy and thrilled for the families including big sis Zoe and big brother Ben!

Izy doing one of his many funny face smiles. this is a newer one.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_aNgurSAt7zs/SFc6ArQVNQI/AAAAAAAAAEc/RIzKbEO8Oro/s320/IMG_3044.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5212698876990272770" />

couldn't resist this one where Molly pops her head in at the last minute. :-)
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_aNgurSAt7zs/SFc6BDBsVfI/AAAAAAAAAEk/gk0vJxzhitA/s320/IMG_3040.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5212698883371324914" />

Look out world....here comes Isaac!

The little guy is walking! I'd say it was official Mother's Day weekend. And he continues to get faster and less wobbly. I kinda like the wobbles though.

He is really growing and talking. Only some things are understandable. Some words/phrases......i wonder if he is speaking in Vietnamese. But i think no....couldn't be. He seems so determined when he talks....and i just can't tell what it is.

Ohhh...but then there are the infamous words that begin with 'B'. Got to be his favorite letter.

bottle, ball, balloon, book (his favorites)....but there are others too.....big, blankie, bib, etc.... It's amazing how many words begin with a 'B' that are BABY-related.....or at least Isaac-related.

We went to our first pool party this weekend. (actually Isaac's first trip to the pool). He was in a little innertube with a seat and wasn't so sure about the whole thing at first....but then decided....he liked the water! We had a good time.....it was big cousin Katelyn's 7th birthday swim party.

I will post a picture a little later.

Pictures (in general) of Isaac may deceive you. He looks so serious. But he's really not. At least not very often. Most of the time he's this funny little fella...that likes to laugh and smile and squeal and chase Molly and Blazer! There was a full house on hand to help Isaac celebrate!

A few pictures. 1st one is Saturday morning. He's letting everyone know (a little sideways) how old he is. Next......really enjoying his birthday cake....and looks like also specifying how old he is. And lastly....a little too bright and early Easter morning.

The last several weeks have been very busy for Isaac and his mommy. We started back to work/daycare the third week of February. And since then, either one or both of us has been pretty much sick just about every day. Hoping it's just a seasonal and 'new to daycare' thing. And we'll get past it. Other than that......everything has been great! Isaac has a funny smile he does on command and also just when he feels like it. It's great for laughs and we all love it. But even more than that I love his real smile and laugh.....which i seem to be seeing and hearing on a regular basis now......and that is so nice. He's growing so much (not walking yet) and i'm just amazed everyday how well he has adjusted. He's such a sweet, smart, friendly, and happy baby boy! And as I've said before and will continue to say.....I am truly blessed!

Baptism and Tornado

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_aNgurSAt7zs/R7e4Yw0JQVI/AAAAAAAAADE/CZFoLXBpQ3Q/s400/isaac+baptism+1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5167801832990916946" />
Feb. 3rd was a very special day. We had Isaac's Baptism in the morning during Mass at my hometown church in Atkins. Several family members and friends were present, as well as our church family. Afterwards my Aunt and Uncle hosted a special celebration brunch at their house. Then in the afternoon, church and family hosted a wonderful shower for Isaac and me. This was the first time many friends and relatives had gotten to see him. He was a little late for his own shower. His Papa had to bring him as he had fallen asleep after his big morning. :-) The picture is taken after Mass. Isaac and I are surrounded by our priest, grandparents, and godparents. It was definitely a very special day to remember.

Feb. 5th was another day to remember, but for a very different reason. My parent's house along with many of their neighbors' was badly damaged or destroyed by the tornadoes in Arkansas (Atkins). My parents are ok. They were in a neighbor's storm cellar. Tragically, the family that lost their life, was my parent's next door neighbors. It's sad beyond words and really just very hard to make any kind of sense of. My parents are moving into a rent house this weekend. They plan/hope to rebuild. I am of course most greatful that they are ok. And it's really amazing the tremendous amount of support and help they have gotten from family, friends, co-workers, community, and complete strangers. I know it's a bit overwhelming for them at times......in witnessing all the kindness. Even little Isaac was a help during the week after. Since i am still on adoption leave, (i go back to work full time on the 20th) we were able to be there quite a bit. And you could just tell when they got to see and hold him.......it helped!! So....that was a good thing.

The Big 1-0 !!!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_aNgurSAt7zs/R5gomvQi3xI/AAAAAAAAAC0/M6t3sA-kTf4/s320/IMG_0462.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5158918019138903826" />
Today is Isaac's 10-month birthday. It's hard to believe we've already been home a month. As someone else said....in some ways being in Vietnam really seems just like a dream. It went by so fast. It's hard for me to remember life before Isaac. He is adjusting so well. It's really amazing. He loves cheerios and puffs (as you can see from the picture....sometimes they don't always make it in his mouth). He can paddy-cake, wave bye-bye, give 5, and best of all.....he gives big sloppy kisses and occasionally says....Momma. He likes playing with his toys and has started watching some dvds, which is great.....because it gives me a chance to do a little here and there.....while he is being entertained. :-)

I still plan to do a semi-Vietnam-recap. And were greeted at the airport by so many friends and family! What a very very special homecoming!

During out LONG journey home, we decided maybe Isaac isn't quite the jet-setter....maybe he doesn't like to travel that much. :-) Actually all things considered, he did ok on the trip......was just a very long, exhausting couple of days.

We said an emotional goodbye Sunday night to Izzy and Aunt Ruth and Aunt Debbie at LAX as we parted ways to return home. We know we'll be in touch though.....and hopefully will get together for reunions.

I think Isaac likes his new home. He seems really comfy in his blue and brown bedroom/crib with his new pillow and sock monkey quilt (thanks Aunt Marty)! He has so many new toys.....maybe just a bit overwhelming trying to figure out what to play with first. Oh.....and Isaac had a very cool baby annoucement sign / balloons waiting on him in our yard when we got home.....from the Gadberrys! :-)

Hard to believe it's Christmas already. For obvious reasons this holiday season has been anything but normal for our family. Our normal activities for Christmas Eve, include getting together with family and going to Midnight Mass. We had comtemplated still doing this.......as we felt pretty good the early part of the day. But sometime mid-afternoon i think it finally hit......and hit hard. We were so sorry not to be able to see family tonight. Tomorrow will be low-key as well.....just trying to get used to being home again......and trying to get Isaac settled in and into a routine. (mommy may have to start writing things down....so she can figure out how to get in a routine as well....remember this is ALL NEW!!)

Thanks to everyone for all their thoughts and prayers while we were in Vietnam....bringing baby Isaac home! It is appreciated more than you know.

What a truly blessed year! Ending in the best Christmas present ever......sweet precious Isaac. And along the way, we were reminded how fortunate we are for all of God's blessings.... especially our friends and family.....also including the many new lasting friendships made on this journey.

Love to everyone!

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!

Saturday evening update

This may be my last post from Vietnam. We leave tomorrow for home!! Izzy & family have the same flight schedule to LAX as us. And Teo & family fly out a little later in the evening. And Emaline & family i belive head out the following day.

We have definitely enjoyed out Vietnamese adventure.......but are ready to get home!

We didn't go on the Halong Bay outing today with the other families. Isaac still isn't feeling very well. We just hung out at the room, then late afternoon decided to get out for a walk, little shopping, and dinner. He really likes riding in his carrier. Wednesday and Thursday were rest days. Friday we have our visa appointments.

Our family has been feeling a bit under the weather at times this week. But at least it was all at different times. We're all feeling much better now.

Saturday we are thinking about going on a tour of Halong Bay.....but not sure if it will work out. Thanks to Ruth for helping put the pics out Snapfish and to Heather for emailing them back to me. I was able to save from this hotel computer and then post to the blog.

At the rate i'm going though....not sure how many more pictures i'll be able to get out there. But at least you can now see Isaac!!!!

He's doing really well. Doesn't necessarily like to go to sleep when it's time and isn't so happy when he is tired......but other than that is just a happy happy baby......crawling everywhere, into everything, and pulling up like crazy. He jabbers and makes all kinds of funny sounds. And has these really cute facial expressions.

He is teething.....so is a little cranky at times. Currently has two bottom teeth and two top teeth.

These pictures are taken at the center. The one of Isaac and me is taken just a few minutes after i first saw him. The one of my parents holding him is a little bit later. and notice their shirts......they are vietnamese for grandma and grandpa!

We leave for Hanoi tomorrow and not sure yet when we will get to leave to return home......will likely depend a lot of holiday air travel. But thinking we should definitely be home by at least Christmas Day!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_aNgurSAt7zs/R2aU2wpIqwI/AAAAAAAAACM/oGrb3mFA3mg/s320/Kim+and+Isaac.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5144963292808653570" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_aNgurSAt7zs/R2aU3ApIqxI/AAAAAAAAACU/H2c28Sm6Ixw/s320/grandparents+and+Isaac.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5144963297103620882" />

Okay, ONE photo through Snapfish site...

http://www1.snapfish.com/selectexistingalbumupload/pageindex=1/t_=10225718

Still having trouble posting photos - so for now, at least one pic for viewing! Hopefully tomorrow!!! We have definitely taken a bunch. :-)

Tonight we ate at a very good authentic Vietnamese restaurant with Izzy & company and Teo & company! Was very good. My new favorite Vietnamese dish is Stir fried Pineapple!

Sunday night in Saigon...wow! You wouldn't believe it. So much traffic and so many people.....everywhere!!! But we are getting a little better at crossing the street. I think the most people we've seen on a scooter so far is 4. But i think the rule is however many people are in your family is how many can ride on your scooter. Outside of the tax center was total chaos....i'm serious! Isaac was in his snuggly carrier and he didn't seem to mind a bit.....i think he liked all the excitement.

Tomorow is a big day. First the moms go and apply for babies' passports. Then take the babies to get their passport picture. Then in the afternoon they have their medical checkups. Should be a fun day! :-)

Then Tuesday evening off to Hanoi. Still have more shopping to do here though. :-)

And by now am craving a sonic vanilla diet coke (heather i hope you've made many happy hour runs). That may be my first stop after getting home. Also ready for some ice! Diet cokes are not always found. (actually here they are Coca-cola - light.....seriously....that's what the can says. taste i guess the same....a little hard to tell...since they aren't real cold. :-)) And we got something we thought was a can of tea the other day.....but not quite sure what it actually was. not good!

Overall, the trip has been great! Vietnam is a wonderful country. The people here are very nice. And they all love babies. So many have smiled and/or commented on how cute Isaac is. And one young Vietnamese girl today while shopping held him (got him from out of the snuggly). Was expecting it to happen sooner or later. It was ok. Also, met a nice family from Holland at breakfast this morning.....who were very friendly and thought Isaac was such a cutie. (btw...when i told them we were from USA.......they were like.....'oh really'...sarcastically. I'm like....it is that obvious!!!???

Anyway, that's about all for now. Need to go make sure the little guy is still asleep. (no worries....he's upstairs with papa.....not by himself).

I promise i'm going to keep trying to post a picture. Have a few picked out already.

Here's Isaac!

One of the first pictures of Isaac and his mommy!

Also a picture with Isaac's buddy Izzy and her mommy Ruth (Aunt Ruth)!

And a picture with Nana and Papa....who have been just wonderful!

It's me again

Sorry so long without a post. Didn't have connection to blogger in Ninh Thuan.

First off.....luggage did arrive intact Wednesday evening. So....was just without it for 10 hours. :-)

Now for the good stuff.

Since having to play catch-up some of this may be a little out of order.

Isaac is absolutely precious! He is such a sweet baby too!

It was very emotional when i first saw him. The nannies had the babies upstairs waiting on us....and they were waving from the balcony. Once i got upstairs i finally got to hold him. So sweet! The center is great. The nannies really just love those babies/kiddos. We spent maybe two hours there....trying to get to know our kiddos and playing with the other babies and kids.

The next moring was our GNR. We drove back to the center and met with the director for a while. He spoke to us and the Dillon staff translated. Then it was time to take the babies to the Justice Department for our GNR. Once there, a few signatures and statements and it was official.

Isaac is doing really well. I think he even liks us. (us being his mommy and his nana and papa)!!!

We went on the beach (south china sea). He papa got him a little wet so he wasn't so sure about it after that.

Ninh Thuan is really beautiful!

Yesterday (saturday) we took the long bus ride back to HoChiMinh City (a much different trip than going....with the kiddos this time).

Our travel group is great. Izzy (and her mommy Ruth and aunt Debbie), Teo (and his mommy Susan and uncle George), Emaline (and her mommy Jessica and daddy Michael), and Isaac (and his mommy and nana Kay and papa Alfie). Everyone did really good on the long bus ride.

This morning we did a little bit of shopping and will rest for a while. We have to get our tickets to Hanoi today. (we'll fly out Tuesday evening). And maybe more shopping tonight.

I'm posting from a computer at the hotel. I promise i'll post a picture from Ruth's computer later today.

We made it!

We're here! It's a little past 1:30 PM.

We had delays in both Little Rock and Dallas. Then met up with Ruth and Debbie in LA! Then our LONG flight began. Wow.....15 1/2 hours! But we made it. Then to Hong Kong. Then the final leg to Vietnam.

Everything went well....with one BIG exception. My 2 suitcases are not here. These contain basically everything....for me and Isaac! Hoping they will turn up tonight or in the morning at the latest. We leave at 7:00 in the morning to go to Ninh Thuan (Isaac's province). We will finally get to see him (and Izzy) around 3:30! And GNR is Friday!

We are fixing to go out and explore the city a little bit. On the bus ride over, we got to see all the crazy traffic we had heard so much about.

Getting really close!

I'm almost set to go.

Wow.....still can't believe it's here. All these things go through my mind about the past year. Overall it went by pretty quick. Of course there were times that seemed to really go by slow....especially the last few months. But it's really going to happen. During all the crazy stress/excitement this past week, someone told me to write it down....that it would happen. And i did and they were right.....it's going to.

Also, kinda interesting to note.....Tuesday when i found out about GNR date, i was wearing this new shirt that simply says 'BELIEVE'. :-)

Isaac - little buddy.....i know you have no idea what is about to happen. But just know I cannot wait to see you and to hold you! And your grandparents feel the same way. They are making this very special trip with me....to bring you home. Your life is going to be filled with so much LOVE! So many people at home cannot wait to see you. They have been following this most amazing journey from the beginning. Just hang in there with me. I promise we'll figure it out. :-)

And one of the very cool things about this journey is all the friendships I have made. When you get home.....you already have all these new friends.....including these special little guys from Vietnam. And I have their moms as friends too. We call ourselves the 'VietMoms'. And what about your sweet little pal Izzy! I have become good friends with Izzy's mom Ruth! She's great! And we talk about you two all the time. I was trying to wait until I have an update.

But will go ahead and give a non-update i guess you could say.

As far as i know officially i am still somewhere between steps 2 & 6. Once at step 7 is when things start happening a bit faster and when updates come more regularly. It's been 9 weeks since my LID (log-in date), so really should be at least at 7 by now. And actually I may be. There is some hope that I'm already there and the notifications just haven't been sent saying so.

So....am still hoping and fairly optimistic that I'll get to travel to bring Isaac home before the end of the year. Was originally hoping it would happen over Thanksgiving.....but not so sure could still happen.

Also, just wanted to say this. I have such wonderful family and friends. Everyone has been so kind and supportive throughout this whole process, and it really just means so much to me. It's really touching and makes me realize how blessed I am. And i can't wait to bring Isaac home and introduce him to everyone. (even Molly - hopefully they will become buds. of course i know......will happen more than once.......Isaac will be screaming, Molly - howling, and Kim - likely crying!) :-)

Hopefully I will have an official update in a few days. August 10th. Travel is now officially 3 to 6 months out from that. I am on step 2 of the 12 steps below.

STEPS FOR THE REFERRAL PROCESS IN VIETNAM

1. After a referral of a child has been accepted and the family has returned the paperwork to Dillon, we will prepare the acceptance documents to be sent to Vietnam. The following is an outline of what occurs once your acceptance paperwork arrives in Vietnam (If your dossier was not logged in prior to acceptance of a referral, your dossier will first have to be sent for translations. After translation is complete, the Dillon staff will then send the dossier to the Department of International Adoption in Hanoi (DIA). The translation and processing of the dossier can take approximately 2-6 weeks (or longer). After your dossier is logged in with the DIA, the below steps are what will occur next): Once your dossier has been logged in then at that time you can estimate possible travel within 3-6 months.

Steps 2-6 will happen after your dossier has been logged in and can take approximately 6 weeks for these steps to be completed.

2. After receiving the acceptance papers, the Dillon staff will send a letter to the Department of International Adoption (DIA) in Hanoi. The letter explains your desire to adopt a child from Vietnam. This process can take about 7 business days or longer for the letter to be sent and received.

3. The DIA will then send a letter to the local justice department of the province in which the child you were referred is residing. The letter is explains that your family is desiring to adopt the child that you have been matched with. This process can take about 7 business days or longer for the letter to be sent and received.

4. Once, the local justice receives the letter from the DIA, they will then send a letter the center (orphanage) telling them which child your family is desiring to adopt. This process can take about 7 business days or longer for the letter to be sent and received.

5. Once the letter is received by the center (orphanage), the center then has to respond with a letter back to the local justice stating that yes this child is available for adoption. This process can take about 7 business days or longer for the letter to be sent and received.

6. Once, the local justice department receives the letter, the local justice department will then send a letter to the Department of International Adoptions (DIA) that yes this child is available for adoption. This process can take about 7 business days for the letter to be sent and received. When the DIA receives the letter from the local justice department, the DIA will then send our staff in Vietnam a letter requesting them to send your acceptance papers of the child that you have been referred. This process can take about 7 business days for the letter to be sent and received. Step 6 can take about 2 weeks or longer to complete.

7. Dillon staff will send the acceptance papers to Hanoi. This process can take about 7 business days or longer for the acceptance papers be sent and received.

8. Once, the DIA receives the acceptance papers from the Dillon staff, the DIA will then send a letter to the local justice department asking them to start compiling the legal docs (child’s dossier). This process can take 30-45 business days or longer to complete.

9. After the child’s dossier has been compiled, the center will send the legal documents to the local justice department. Once, the local justice department receives the dossier, they will then review the dossier. After they have completed the review process, they will then forward the legal documents to the DIA. The review process can take 1 week or longer.

10. The DIA will review the child’s legal documents and your family’s dossier. After the DIA has completed the review process, they will send the child’s legal documents and the family’s dossier back to the local justice department. The review process can take 1 week or longer.

11. The local justice department will then review the family’s dossier. Once, they have reviewed the family’s dossier, they will then send the family’s dossier and child’s legal documents to the people’s committee. The Dillon Vietnam staff will at this time also submit the commitment forms and power of attorney forms that you signed at time of acceptance. The review process can take 1 week or longer.

12. The people’s committee will then review your family’s dossier and the child’s legal documents. Once, they have completed the review process, the chairman of the people’s committee will give an approval (decision). After, the approval of the chairman, the child’s legal documents and your family’s dossier are sent back to the local justice department for your GNR date to be issued. This process can take 1 week or longer.

Update on Isaac

I received Isaac's new development report for July. Berke is short for Berkemeyer which he's being named after my grandparents 'Mom' & 'Pop' Berkemeyer.
His birth middle name - Van - just happens to be a family name.....so i decided to keep that to also be part of his name.

Isaac Berke Van Hettel
